Chamber board endorses Union-Scioto renewal levy

CHILLICOTHE – The board of directors of the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce recently voted to endorse the 0.5% income tax renewal levy for the Union-Scioto Local Schools. The issue will appear on the May 7 ballot.

“Our mission statement includes ‘addressing issues important to local business’ and having well-run, efficient, and quality centers of learning are crucial to the business community in Ross County,” said Mike Throne, president and CEO of the Chamber. “Our advocacy committee and board believe the Union-Scioto schools have delivered a quality education to students and parents and the renewal of the levy is essential to its mission. We support a ‘yes’ vote on May 7.”

The board’s endorsement comes after school officials and the levy committee met with the Chamber’s Advocacy Committee, which recommended an endorsement to the full board, which concurred with the move. The district is also a member in good standing with the Chamber.

Matt Thornsberry, superintendent of the Union-Scioto schools, issued the following statement: “On the behalf of the Board of Education, staff, students, and community members of the Union-Scioto School District, I would like to express our appreciation to the Chillicothe Ross Chamber of Commerce for their endorsement of our Renewal levy this May. Coming from an organization that recognizes the value of community, the strength and growth of businesses, and the positive impact of effective, fiscally responsible schools, it is an honor to be endorsed. This endorsement serves as a confirmation and inspiration to continue to do our very best to fulfill our role in strengthening our entire Ross County community.”

The Advocacy Committee cited Union-Scioto’s commitment to administrative efficiency and strong community support as key factors in its support.
